Urban Density and Transit
Earlier this year, I was in the Bay Area visiting colleagues at my company’s headquarters. I was chatting with Kendo, who is an engineer, about commuting to work. He said that he prefers public transportation to driving, but that the urban density where he lives is too low to support public transit.
I recalled this conversation recently when I was walking through my neighborhood and saw some newly constructed high-density housing. See the photo above. They look like either townhouses or apartments.
Now, I am blessed by living near several transit stops. But that said, I have seen my bus service degrading since around the time of the pandemic.
It would be interesting to see if new housing construction affects density enough to make a difference in transit service.
